Mouse Cursor has confetti block

Post by Dinosaur »

Hi All

I have a Fitlet-B Barebone with 2Gb of Ram and a 30Gb mSata drive which has
my customised version of Mint Mate 17.2 on it.

When I run this disk on a standard Industrial cpu board, and use a vga connector,
the mouse cursor is ok.

Now I use a Fitlet-B and an HDMI to DVI cable to a lcd monitor.
In that case the mouse cursor has a rectangular block under it that looks like it
is filled with pixels of all sort of colours. Thus the confetti block description.

Any of the standard apps that come with Mint, don't affect the appearance, but
if I run my machine control application in a lower resolution (1024x768) it disappears.
However as soon as you take the cursor over the edge of my app, it immediatly re-appears.

I am a newcomer to Linux, but have been computerising machines in Dos and XPe
for many years. So, I dont really know where to look to solve this problem.

Anyone experienced this before ? or have a solution ?

Hi,

When I have used a USB live session to boot and install Mint (I have MintBox Mini) I have noticed that the mouse cursor is distorted and I think it had a rectangle box under it, but from memory I think this went away once the system was installed and running from the mSATA drive.

Fitlet B Has the Radeon 2 I think and MintBox has Radeon3 so that's unlikely to be the reason?

Does this sound similar to your issue?
Have you booted from a live USB (Mint Mate) and seen what I get when I do?

Not really got any answers for you just more questions, but its a starting point.

Hi All

bradjj thanks for the reply.
The problem I am getting is with the mSata.
I prepared a Compact Flash on a separate cpu board.
Once I got it all customised, and got delivery of my Fitlet B Barebone (no mSata included) I wrote the Image from Compact Flash to an mSata I purchased separately.
Then once I plugged it in, all seemed to work. (except for the rect box)

Why not try booting off USB Linux Mint Mate live image and see if its the same as I described? Maybe that is something like the problem you are having?

What mSATA drive have you got installed? Brand and model?

I have had some problems with my MintBox and changed the mSATA drive to see if they go away!

There was also some issue with flgx (something like that) drivers on mint I believe.

Hi All

Has been some time since I have been able to get back to this.
Since my last post, I have re-installed a clean copy of Mint without success.

I have also eliminated the msata drive as the culprit, (Transcend MSA370)
by plugging the drive into another computer, and there was no "confetti block".
Although granted it was using a vga port on that test, and a CirQue mouse pad.

Whereas on the Fit pc I use the HDMI and a Logitech wireless mouse.
Have tried the Touchpad and it doesn't make any difference.

I am convinced the problem lies with the hdmi port and whatever drivers associated with it.(fit pc or Linux Mint Mate 17.2)

Is there an update for this ?

I have updated using Mint Software update, and that is up to date.

I need to buy another 4 of these for a project, and if a solution is not found, I will buy
one of them with Mint Installed and see if the same happens there.

EDIT: Changing to second hdmi port didn't fix it either.
Perhaps a hdmi to vga adapter and then using vga may fix it.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies.
It is worth noting that I have not installed any particular video drivers, just simply the
driver that comes with a normal Mint install.
Also no additional multimedia player software.

These units I intend to use as simple machine control 95% of the time.
The other 5% is looking at spreadsheet reports and pdf manuals.

When my software is taking over the screen, then there is no problem,
(FreeBasic with CGUI & Allegro libraries) in 1024 x 768 resolution.

Hi All

Just another update
Originally I had a HDMI to DVI converter to plug into the LCD Monitor.
So, now I bought a HDMI to VGA adapter and the problem remains the same.
Confetti block under the mouse pointer, until I run my app, and then it disappears.

EDIT: OK, think I found the problem. Between powering down, the BIOS is NOT saving
whatever it corrected when you go into the bios.
Example:
I went into the bios and turned Remote Display to Disabled.
Rebooted and WOW the problem is gone.
Turned the Power off, and re-powered, bugger, the problem is back.
Repeated this with making no changes to the bios at all, just go in and get out.
Each time the problem was gone UNTIL you re-power.
Also repeated with HDMI-VGA & HDMI-DVI, same result.

EDIT: Updating Bios did NOT solve the problem.

Now that has to be a Bios bug.
