I am very tempted to buy a fitpc2 for a media centre but would like SPDIF output.
Is this at all possible?

Just buy a USB sounds card like this one...

Thanks for the info but I was planning on running MythTV on linux so I need one that is compatible.

Is it so that there is no builtIn way to get any kind of AC3/DTS output via coaxial cable from output jack?

No, only analog stereo is routed to the line-out jack.

Just to update anyone looking at this post, Fit PC2 and 2i now come with full S/PDIF digital audio output.
