USB-Powered Monitor?

Post by samwaltz »

Greetings,

I was wondering if there was a specific USB-powered monitor you would recommend. I am considering these:
http://www.geekstuff4u.com/8-inch-usb-monitor.html
http://www.geekstuff4u.com/4-3-inch-usb-monitor.html

However, the site claims that they are Windows and Mac compatible, with no mention of Linux. Is anyone using a similar display? Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Sam

Edit: I just found a site in Portuguese claiming this one had Linux drivers.

Ah, well, I guess the question is still open. Are there any monitors that you know don't work? Any recommendations?

Don't know anything about linux drivers but I have noticed that all the USB monitors I've seen in my recent research say that these are not really intended as primary monitors, just secondary ones. I'm not sure if that's b/c they are so small or if there is some real driver issue with running them as the main monitor.

A few more USB monitor options to check out
http://www.lilliput.com.cn sells a 7" UM-70 USB monitor

And mimo makes one but the engaget reviewer wasn't much impressed with the touch-screen part:

Another source for the mimo:

Also keep in mind if you are just looking for a small monitor that any screen you set has to have a digital DVI/HDMI input. You can't just by a VGA monitor and use the usual converter plugs since the fitpc puts out real digital DVI, not the sort of DVI that can just be routed straight to VGA.

I was looking for a small low power monitor with DVI which is very hard to find. I finally got a 10.5" touchscreen made by Lilliput from here: http://www.lcd-touchscreen-monitor.com/ Just plugged it in, seems to work great. takes a 12v input. can handle high resolutions but really looks best at 800x600.
You have to send them cash via western union and then they mail it. Costs about $70 for shipping so the whole thing came to about $220. Lots of money compared to the cost of the fitpc but it seems to be the only option I've found.

Please let us know if you get find USB monitor that works as a primary display.
