re-install Ubuntu 8.04

Post by puiu »

I try to re-install Ubuntu 8.04 using a CD built using the instructions posted on the forum.

After I start Install Ubuntu and answer to the initial questions, the Create partition page is displayed with all the options disable.

I cannot create the partitions. What do I need to do from here?

Thank you,

Puiu

I used this hard drive to install windows XP and was working.

After Ubuntu installation fail for the first time, I used Gpart to erase the old partition.

Now seams the hard drive is not recognized.

Maybe you forgot the "all_generic_ide" kernel boot option?

Hi

I burnt another CD, the installation ends OK, I re-boot and edit kernel line adding all_generic_ide

The booting process stops after a while with the following error and I don"t know what to do next:

Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...
Check root=bootarg cat /proc/cmdline
or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/aa6e89a2-320d-476c-ba6c-5fdf4c349b2b does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of build-in commands.
(initramfs)

Strange. May be you have bad CD again?.. Have you tried to install Ubuntu 9.04? 9.04 should recognize hard drive without any additional kernel options.

I installed ubuntu 9.04 and it is working. But it is slower than 8.04.3

I download again 8.04.3, I checked MD5Sum and made another CD.
After reboot I have the same error message as before.

Any suggestion?

Seems like you have slightly non-standard hard disk and generic kernel driver can not recognize it properly when booting.
We are using Seagate Momentus 5400.5 160GB or HITACHI Travelstar 5K500.B 160GB.

You can try the next:
1. Connect your harddrive to another Linux PC via SATA connection directly or SATA-to-USB adapter

2. Make chroot into filesystem on your harddrive. Supposing it recognised as /dev/sdb1

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
sudo mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash
3. Make all "Necessary system changes" as described in http://www.fit-pc2.com/wiki/index.php?t ... buntu_8.04

4. Plug your harddrive back to fitPC2 and try to boot

Thank you for your reply. The hard drive is the one that came with the unit.

The problem was that after all_generic_ide is added to the kernel line you need to use "b" to boot not ENTER.

If ENTER is used the editing of kermel line is lost and the error I described occurs.

Maybe somebody should fix the installation instructions to avoid frustration for other users.
