Booting from external HDD?

Post by manoka »

Hello,
I bought a new fit-PC 2i without a HDD. Now I wanted to connect my two IDE HDDs - where Ubuntu 8.10 is installed - with it, and obviosly have to buy an IDE to SATA adapter, or one to connect them via USB.
So my question is: Will the computer boot the Ubuntu OS if the HDDs are connected via USB, and/or, if not, is there a connector or a cable available with a male SATA plug on each side/end?
Many thanks in advance for any hints!

Fit-PC2i allows boot from USB hard disk if the operating system supports this. Ubuntu does support this but probably you would have to change something in GRUB since USB path is different from IDE path.

It is possible to use SATA to IDE converter but then you would not be able to close Fit-PC2i cover, so it's not recommended.
