[INFO] Ubuntu 10.04 LTS working, 12.04 LTS cannot install

Post by bogart »

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, it works just fine.

A fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS fails due to the default PAE kernel included in the installation media:
This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
It may be possible to bypass this error using a custom-built installation media, but I do not have the time to play around with this option at the moment. I shall wait until July 2012 to do the upgrade to 12.04 LTS and report back again.

Upon logging to the machine, I got a message:
New release 'precise' available.
Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it.
I run "sudo do-release-upgrade" but after a few checks it failed:
No i686 CPU

Your system uses an i586 CPU or a CPU that does not have the 'cmov'
extension. All packages were built with optimizations requiring i686
as the minimal architecture. It is not possible to upgrade your
system to a new Ubuntu release with this hardware.

Restoring original system state

Aborting
It looks like it is not possible to upgrade 10.04 LTS to 12.04.1 LTS due to the non-PAE kernel issue. IMHO, it should upgrade ... Also, starting from 12.10 non-PAE kernels will not be officially supported by Ubuntu. I guess the only way to move forward of 10.04 LTS is a fresh install with a custom-built installation media or install something like Lubuntu/Xubuntu that offers non-PAE support, as described at http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/how-to-i ... n-pae.html

If any other option is available for upgrade, I would be glad to hear!

Ubuntu 12.04 was tested on FitPC2. To gain an acceptable video performance you should install several packages and to downgrade the xserver. If you want to experiment with this on your own risk, I can provide you with instruction.

Please note: there is still several performance issues with this method, therefore it is not officially supported,

My comment about the upgrade offer was about Ubuntu. I think they should provide an upgrade method from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS even for non-PAE systems.

As a last test, I used the mini.iso from http://www.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/di ... t/non-pae/. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on the FitPC Slim. It worked just fine. I shall let this machine rest for now.

So, my conclusion is that you cannot upgrade Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on the FitPC Slim but you can make a fresh install of 12.04.1 LTS using a non-PAE boot media, like the mini.iso
