USB to RS-232 Converter on fit-PC2i and IR

I would like control my fit-PC2i with my remote over IR. Well, fit-PC2i does not have any built in IR receiver but I hope it could work with home made receiver connected over USB to serial converter like UC232A.
The setup as such is working on Windows but I´m not able to get it working with Ubuntu 9.04 (I´ve tested this on my laptop).
I´ve been playing hours with Lirc, irw, mode2 using plenty of installation and configuration guides but still without success.
Done so far:
* The UC232A cable is successfully recognized and system attaches it to /dev/ttyUSB0
* installed latest lirc version
* irw starts up but does not show any traffic
* mode2 -d /dev/lirc0 does not work and says something like "connection refused, device busy). dmesg says IRQ4 busy.
Any ideas what to try next?
