Fit PC2 as Wireless AP?

Post by efj »

I'm pretty interested in this new device, but I need confirmation that it can act as a wireless AP under Ubuntu Server/Desktop.

Has anyone achieved this yet?

Thanks for your feedback,

Eric

No, AP mode is not supported. From Ralink 3090 readme:
Features:
This driver implements basic IEEE802.11. Infrastructure and adhoc mode with open or shared or WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK authentication method. NONE, WEP, TKIP and AES encryption.
Compulab's Linux support

If you change the Wireless adaptater or put a USB wireless adaptater which support AP mod (Master mod under linux). The fit-PC 2 can work as an AP.

Does anyone here know what mini PCI express cards or usb adaptors that will work as an access point in linux. http://linuxwireless.org/ does not provide consistent information about AP mode and it is difficult to see the chipset used in the usb adaptors.

USB adapters are problematic because manufacturers will often switch chipsets without changing any external markings - the only way to distinguish them is by the model number printed on the adapter itself.

As many users bring up the problem of not being able to create a wireless AP, could we combine the work, and identify a mini-PCIE wireless card that IS capable of master mode and would be a fine replacement of the shipped card?

This should include availability and the possible to buy single cards (not starting at 100+ :D ).

At last I found a mini-PCI-express card that can be used in master mode :

Take a look at this page:

http://acx100.erley.org/

SparkLAN WPEA-110N 11n Atheros AR9002 minicard (WPEA110N-S0)

It evens supports 802.11n (draft)
-----
I have just recieved the card and can confirm that it can be used in master mode with the latest compat-wireless version and hostapd 0.6.9

Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... ss_drivers is mentioned that Ralink 3090 chipset is getting support in kernel 2.6.33 (rt2x00). There is also mentioned that rt2x00 driver supports master mode.

Is it really going to work? Is it possible to run Ralink 3090 with master mode?

Under Windows XP Home it is possible, so, technically working.

Update: I mean, Ralink is working, but Realtek is not working as AP.
