yes - i would like to know the answer to this as well - does the fit-PC slim have sufficient power on the usb port to support a usb network adapter? |

Most likely - yes, the USB has enough power to drive a WiFi dongle, wired Ethernet should consume less power. _________________ -------------------------

Hello,
Also i would purchase a fit-PC slim immediately if it would have 2 ethernet ports.
Main applications would be:
- proxy/firewall
- filesharing over samba
- small internal webserver (lighttpd)
And i'm also thinking about implementing the Asterisk server (PABX).
I don't think that 512M is needed for running all of this simultaneously, but at least it offers room for more applications and a lot of flexibility then the NSLU2 i'm currently using.
I really would like to use the fit-PC as an NSLU2 replacement: a small low-power box on which i can compile code myself, something i can not do with the very small amount off memory available on the NSLU2!
So i'm eagerly waiting for a message indicating we can order a fit-PC slim with 2 Ethernet ports and 512M of memory. Can't wait to see this happening, i will be jumping on that train very fast!
Regards,
Marc |

Fit-PC with dual ethernet = instant purchase providing the price is not a lot higher. Would be great to replace my Asus WL-500g with a fitPC. I could also box my crappy desktop PC an just keep the fanless noiseless PC and laptop.
Really hope to see it happen. |

I see fit-pc as a versatile option for a small-scale file server. There are so many ways to provide data service on a (Linux) network, that it is ideal for a SOHO environment. The low power makes sure it is environmentally sane.
A file server on 512 MB is acceptable, but I doubt 256 MB would be.
To enable redundant applications, a second ethernet connection may be helpful; two or more file servers could directly communicate over that second/storage network, without the bothersome procedures of the "normal" interface: the need to authenticate, not being able to sense ethernet connectivity directly, and having to fight for bandwidth. Especially the latter is useful, as it is pleasant to be able to update a redundant copy as swiftly as possible, especially when it is awaited (DRBD has such a mode, where a sync() awaits remote updates as well as local disk updates).
In addition to this, having a wireless connection on redundant systems is silly; and it may be a security problem. The second connector is much better when used for wired connections. |

I don't need dual ethernet. I'd dearly like to see 512Mb, because I need to run XP. I don't want Wi-fi; it's just one other thing to turn off.
Application is Slim Server for music, some other small windows apps, and a bunch of USB devices (print, scanner, etc) that need to be served to other windows boxes. If I can get single ethernet, no wi-fi, and 512Mb, it all starts to look interesting. |

I have bought two Fit-PC for a professional and personnal server.
* One (Fit-PC 1.0) is for firewall/gateway, Web server, VPN and SMTP with low traffic (about a thousand mails/day). It is running since 4 July 2009 under debian Etch without any problems. But I had to wrap clamav and spamassassin to make mails with invalids recipients not scanned and linux recipients not scanned with clamav. 256M is a little short for lot of clamav and spamd process. A WIFI interface able to be in Master mode would be a good thing for this computer. On this computer also runs «motion» with a Philips webcam. No problems with this computer:
| Code: | ~$ uptime
09:21:54 up 172 days, 19:38, 2 users, load average: 0.85, 0.52, 0.56
|
A two Ethernets with 512M mega would be really more confortable for SMTP and to add a program to record TV programs on this computer (In France, the FAI Free allow to have TV via Internet stream and to record the Mpeg stream using vlc)
* Second Fit-PC (Fit-PC slim) is just behind the first one, install 3 days ago under Debian Lenny, I have change the hard disk with a 100G one on which I have previously install debian lenny (with debootstrap). I only take the 2.6.27 kernel, the modules and all the firmware from the Ubuntu partition. Since WIFI cannot be in Master mode, I cannot make an access point. On this computer is running Web and Web-ssl server with PHP and MySQL and gpg to crypt confidential document on line. (Fit-PC is small enough to be easily stolen so I must care that confidentials files have to be crypted, I'm not sure that Fit-PC is strong enought for crypted partitions). On this computer, I'm also recording and reencoding TV streams (background works with small priority without any pbms but it needs time )
I really appreciate these two computers. |

I understand that the FitPC 1.0 is being out phased.
512 MB and dual ethernet is a must. No need for WiFi. It would be an ideal firewall. So, go for it! |

Any news on a dual-ethernet Slim fit-PC? If it is not going to happen any time soon, that's fine. I just need to know so I can move on...
Thanks,

CompuLab is phasing out the fit-PC 1.0
There is no intention to offer the 512MB dual ethernet model.
However we will consider the feedback in development of future products.
Thank you to all the posters. _________________ -------------------------

How do I split or distribute the ethernet output from my cable modem? I want to hardwire an internet radio and the modem has only one ethernet output which provides internet to my PC. Can I split or run the ethernet into a hub or distributor?

I'm trying to decide if a Fit-PC Slim will work for me (as a web content filter/firewall/router). I'd buy one now if I could get dual ethernet NIC.
Since the Fit-PC Slim is not available (any I can find) with dual ethernet NIC, is there any way for me (the end user) to remove the WiFi and replace it with a second ethernet adapter? I seem to recall reading that the WiFi occupies the lone mini pci-express slot. Could a suitable mini pci-express ethernet adapter be used without voiding the warranty?
Has anyone had success doing this? Which OS(es)?
Thanks.
Jimboha
PS I know the fit-PC2i will have two ethernet NICs, but I can't order it at least for a couple of weeks AND I can't find any information about the price, but I'm afraid it will be too high for me application. |

WiFi in fit-PC Slim is USB.
fit-PC2i is the recommended solution for your application. _________________ -------------------------

Agreed, but... WHEN will it ship and WHAT will it cost? I can't find either on the web site (so I don't really expect you to tell me in this forum). There is a twitter message that seems to indicate mid March for placing orders.
I plan to try a USB-ethernet adapter to see if that works. If not, I'll use the fit-pc slim as kitchen computer for recipes, etc, and try out the Guruplug (@$129 but not shipping until April) as a web content filter.
Related question: is the USB WiFi user-removable or does that void the warranty?
Thank you.
