Hello,

Fit-pc will gradually replace a 7-year-old Linux server in my basement...

I have a need for a Linux distro that has a really good suite of shell utilities, without the "graphics overhead" wasting too much disk space (i.e. KDE or Gnome). Complete enough to include things like additional development utilities and software (IDE's using ncurses library, for example), or easily installed without having to install millions of additional libraries... X (even KDE/Gnome is fine but optional), as long as it happily 'stays out of the way' 98% of the time, with no performance overhead. i.e. No X stuff running in background when not running, and not too much dissappearance of disk space...

It's been years since I installed a complete install of Linux (my home Linux server is an install from 2000, upgraded with security patches and new kernels/libs), so I'm kind of out of the loop on the best Linux distro to install from scratch on a lightweight PC such as this, without being bogged down by the kiddie GUI extras...

Recommendations of a good Linux disto for this purpose?

P.S. To operator of forum: I did not post this in the Linux forum, because questions get answered faster here. Also, I've noticed that a golden forum-startup rule was 'ignored' here: Starting a forum with too many topics at the beginning. (Famous forum operators of million-post forum sites know this very well -- I was a volunteer moderator of two such sites so have learned a few secrets -- google my name along with the word forum ("Mark Rejhon" +forum) has a lot of hits)... Basically start a forum with too few topics at first (and add new topics on demand) since people like to populate on forums with fewer-yet-busier topics rather than too many: The chicken and egg problem of trying to make an empty forum less boring. It may be worth considering merging topics for the next time this forum website is redesigned (and merging the threads into fewer topics), a sweet spot being 5 or 8 or so topics maximum in a forum 'startup' (depending on nicheness of forum), although reducing to even 10 or 12 would be better than now... Very Happy

Debian 4.0r1 or Gentoo would serve your needs fine.
My server runs Debian typically without X, but I have the VESA graphics server available if needed.
