Cannot Install Epson scanner driver for xsane backend

Mintbox 2 (Dec2014) on Rebecca 17.1. Scanner Epson Perfection 4180 Photo. Installed xsane from Software Manager, but the scanner backend is needed. Obtained correct driver from Epson as tar.gz. Unzipped and unpacked the tar to an iscan folder. The ./configure then cannot create executables (failure log e.g. g++ and c++ are "no"). Is the iscan folder required to be inside /etc/sane.d I cannot move it there even as root user, so it is left in a Home folder. Epson also offer/recommend an rpm download but that would require installing rpm first. Epson also say the xsane should have been installed by the same route as the driver. This is beyond my low level of Linux skills: would appreciate instructions to get set up.
