Intel VT-x & VT-d

Post by baeschtu »

Hi everybody
I'd like to know if the Intel Virtualization Technology VT-d and VT-x is fully supported by the chipset and Bios of the Intense PC (version with the Core i7). As far as I know, the Core i7 - CPU supports both of them (see: http://ark.intel.com/products/65713/Int ... -2_80-GHz) ).
Since I'm planning to use the device passthroug features of Xen on an Intense PC, the support of VT-x and VT-d is required.

Thx in advance.

I can confirm at least that an Intense PC Pro i7 (QM77 chipset apparently) works fine with VMware 5.0 ESXi (Update 1). Not sure if its using the VT-x/d or whatever but it installs and runs fine.

hi kenw232
Thanks for your reply. Can you please check it via the "advanced configuration" in the vSphere client for the Intense PC? There's a howto in this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzcWd9ve ... page#t=31s . Maybe you need to activate the Intel VT-d functionality in the Bios settings.
It would be great to see which devices support the passthrough-functionality.

Apparently you need to do more stuff first as mentioned here:

This URL shows the i7-3517UE used in the IntencePC Pro supports everything...

Hello Kenw232,

Sorry for the Out of Topic question but could you please tell us if your intense PC i7 runs very hot / medium hot or rather cool ?

Thanks !
Pierre

Thanks, kenw232 for the links. At least from a HW perspective everything is avalailable on the Intense PC with th Core i7. The other stuff is SW-hacking. I would rather use KVM for the virtualization which also supports PCI/VGA/USB-passthrough.

It runs pretty hot. I read most do, its suppose to be normal. Hot enough that I can't hold my hand on top of it.
