Pcle card versus wireless card

Post by gunjar »

Hi,

Just recieved my Fitlet (iA10 barebone), sweet!!!!!
I also ordered your 3g modem kit,

When I went to install the kit I found that it appears that one can only mount either the modem kit OR the wireless card, is this correct?

I had seen that its description said it could coexist with wireless, without noticing the "On these platforms" didn't mention Fitlet.

I hope not, I had intended to use the 3G modem as a wireless hotspot for my partners tablet and other wirelessly connecting items whilst I used the PC when we are travelling in areas where there is no WiFi available.
Would be very disapointed if thats not a possibility, or even if one has to go thru opening up the case & unmount/mounting every time one wants to change between wireless & 3G, so please tell me I've got it wrong and they can coexist!

And if they can, how?
And where does the 3G arial attach to the fitlet?

Regards
Gunjar

Indeed, fitlet incorporates single mini PCIe slot, meaning it can accept single PCIe device at a time. fitlet-i/iA10 models comes with Wireless mini PCIe card and it cannot be used together with a cellular modem (which is also mini PCIe device).
If you want to use both Wireless and 3G cellular modem you can do it by connecting an external USB dongle Wireless module.

Combination cellular-wifi mini PCI-E cards are available. One such card is the Option GTM671W. This card is supposedly supported by Linux for kernel version 2.6.26 and higher.

This card may provide you with another option.

The GTM671W has 4 antenna connectors - 2 each for wlan and wwan. To use it with Fitlet you will have to connect 1 antenna to wlan and the other antenna to wwan. Also, this card does not include bluetooth.

Hi,
Thanks for the information mbirger & hassellbear, whatever will be will be, comes of not reading descriptions carefully enough, my fault.

Fitlet is still very nice to use! Such a big leap from my fit-PC2i quick & smooth, and all that RAM helps with my dreadful Australian country internet connection, can even stream things that don't demand too much band width.

A question still from the last question, does the 3G arial attach to one of the wireless arial screw on terminals?
probably seem totaly obvious but if ya don't know then Ask

and,
the wireless card has wires to those terminals should the modem card also have a wire to one of them?

or does it do its thing some other way?

also

hasselbear, does that mean that blue tooth is included in the wireless card and one will lose it if one changes over to the PCi-E card GTM671W you mention?

Yes, cellular and Wifi card uses the same antenna connectors/cables, but they come with different antenna of course. You just have to disconnect the RF cables from one device and connect to the other.
