Disk read error on boot

i just (as in yesterday) bought a fit-PC2i 2GB/2GHz (rev 1.2) Atom Z550 2 GHz, RAM 2 GB, HDD 160 GB, Windows 7 Professional from amazon. out of the box it will not boot because of a disk read error. i tried running recovery console from an XP disk but as soon as it accesses the disk it reboots the machine. any attempt to boot to the HD results in a disk read error. i've checked the connections and they all seem fine.

i'm in need of an RMA ASAP
