I connected a IDE 3.5" HDD and a DVD drive.
Apparently, the problem is not the adapter but the HDD and the DVD drive, as the former works with another IDE 3.5" HDD.
Many thanks again yogev_ezra!
IDE and SATA to USB adapter
Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
After completing the installation of Linux Mint 9, I was trying to mount the same HDD which worked before via the same USB adapter, but now I'm getting a message which reads:
"Unable to mount 298 GB Filesystem
Error mounting: mount: Stale NFS file handle"
What could be the cause and the solution?

Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
Did you dismount it last time after you've done working with it?
I mentioned it in one of my previous posts:

Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
I probably did, though probably not through the command in the terminal, but by clicking on "Safely Remove Drive".
The reply from "sudo umount /mnt/usbdisk" is:
"umount: /mnt/usbdisk: not found"
I checked whether a HDD was mounted via USB (with "sudo fdisk -l") and got the following result - which I don't understand, but I guess it means that there's no such connection):
______________________________________________________________________
Disk /dev/sda: 4096 MB, 4096253952 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 498 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00064826
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 470 3766272 83 Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 470 498 231425 5 Extended
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda5 470 498 231424 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
Try "mkdir /mnt/usbdisk" and then try the "mount" command again. If it still does not work, please post here the command as you've written it, and the output.
Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
First I tried "sudo mkdir /mnt/usbdisk" - with no output.
Then I just entered "mkdir /mnt/usbdisk" - output:
"mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/usbdisk': File exists"
The USB-HDD is detected, but I get still the same message when trying to open it.
I also noticed that today booting was stopped or frozen, and there was the following written on the screen:
"fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda1 has been mounted 25 times without being checked, check forced.
/dev/sda1: 133127/235712 files (0.2% non contiguous), 732848/941568 blocks"
Does this not have anything to do with the USB-HDD?

Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
i had that problem with the (non contiguous) thing. either you switched the computer of without shuting down the operating system or the harddrive is dying. i used smart and in my case it sayd: harddrive is expected to die within the next 24 hour, backup immidiatly. was too late, a lot of files had been corrupt.

Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
Thanks for the hint!
Looks like it takes again hours to figure out how this works.
Actually I'm just using the stationary SSD at the moment.
Aren't these supposed to be more durable than the HDDs?
But anyway, still the same problem, can't open (mount) any other HDD, including the one I connected inside the PC - and any HDD that I connect shows up in the "Computer" folder.

Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
Fit-PC2/i has issues with certain SSD disks. This is likely to be a problem with Fit-PC2 BIOS and not the SSD itself. Can you post the SSD name/specification? Or are you talking about the 4GB flash soldered on board?
Re: IDE and SATA to USB adapter
Yes, I'm talking about- and am able to use only the 4GB flash soldered on board.
