802.11n not working with 9.10

Post by gmv100 »

Hi,

I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to the latest 9.10. Most things are fine, but I've realised that the wifi is no longer supporting 802.11n. I have a mixed 802.11b/g/n network which the Fit-PC2 is connecting to in 802.11g mode. If I switch the router to 802.11n only then the Fit-PC2 won't connect. Enabling/disabling WPA has no effect.

I found some posts on some forums about editing the /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat file, but this has had no effect. Interestingly, removing this file does not cause the driver to log an error to dmesg like some others have reported - makes me thing the driver is not attempting to read the file.

I've also tried downloading the latest driver from RALink's website and building it. It builds without error, but inserting the module has no effect - no new network interface is created.

Any ideas what I can do to get 802.11n support back?

Yes, I followed those instructions to the letter. It gave me a working system, but I'm only getting 802.11g speeds and I can't connect to my router in 802.11n-only mode. Otherwise the system is fine.

802.11n requires 2 antennas while Fit-PC2 only has 1.

Ah. Now I'm confused, because I was getting connection rates of greater than 54Mbps when I was using Ubuntu 8.04 on the same hardware.

Reading around, I've found articles that reference 802.11n hardware with only one antenna, but those being limited to 85Mbps because of that. Could it be that the Fit-PC2 was operating in this mode? I don't recall ever getting a higher connection rate than this, to my disappointment at the time but now it makes sense.

Given that it has worked before I'm going to keep trying to make it work again. I've found some articles that reference a similar problem with netbooks using the same hardware, so I'll try following those. I'll report back if I have any success.

Sorted. I followed the instructions on this site: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... stcount=57

My connection is now syncing at 72Mbps. Not astounding, but just enough to keep TV streaming without pauses.
