More information would be helpful

Do you have the diskless version? If so, you'll have to partition the disc before installing. The Debian installer (I'm guessing Ubuntu is the same) lets you partition the disc during the installation, either automatically or manually.

If you are using a live image of ubuntu I had the same issue, the hard drive is not detected. It's because the ide-generic module is not loaded, I fixed it by typing in terminal: "modprobe ide-generic"
