Strange USB mouse timeout issue

I ordered fit-pc2 with Win7 from amazon. We decided to downgrade them to XP due to some issues with compatibility of our corporate software. Everything else hardware wise worked great on win 7, but after the downgrade, the optical mouse we are using seems to time out and stop responding.
Unplugging and replugging it forces os recognition and it works fine again, but as soon as it goes to screen saver or hibernation its dead on return.
any ideas what/where I can look into this? The same mouse model works great on other XP systems without this issue.
