AutoOn & Watchdog and not good friends

Post by bb1234 »

Hi

We are running on our machines the watch dog feature and also the auto-on.
all of our fitpc2 were purchased with the auto on feature.

It seems that sometimes when the watch-dog timer reboots the computer, the computer will simply shutdown and will stay like that untill unplugging the power and putting it back.

It happens mostly when the watchdog restarts the computer more then once in 5 minutes. (our watchdog is set on 2 minutes)

this happens occasionally, on multiple computers.

can you suggest a solution?

Please describe the scenario in more details - including OS used and we will try to reproduce.
I would not assume that failure to restart on watchdog is necessarily related to the auto-on.

In general watchdog timer is meant as a safeguard against OS instability. If for some reason your application requires frequent system rebooting it is recommended to prefer a reboot by OS command over reboot by watchdog.

Hi Irad,

We are using WindowsXP.

We have a software that runs on the machines,
every 20 seconds the software reloads the watch dog, and sets it's timer on 240secs.

our software is very stable and runs fluently, however we would still like to use the watchdog, since it is intended for long running duration.

on All machines, we notice that sometimes the watchdog kicks in without request (about 3 times a day), this is not a big issue,
the big problem is that at about 30% of the times that the computer reboots because of the watchdog, the computer simply won't restart.

to restart the computer we need to disconnect the power cord and connect it again.

We will try to reproduce. I am not aware of watchdog reboot issues.

thanks,
pay special attention to scenarios in which the watchdog kicks in repeatedly.
