Well, just had a first look at it and I am not really an experted in xorg.foo, but despite some lvds, sdvo and hdmi erros, which are present in my log files, too, here is the one that currently bugs me:
(EE) PSB(0): First SDVO output reported failure to sync or input is not trainded!!!
FYI: LVDS is an internal connector mostly used for embedded displays like on notebooks. SDVO is a connector which can output quite some signals, e.g. HDMI/DVI. The latter one is used on the fitpc2 for the external displays.

Could you post your xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and -- if possible -- try another display?

Works, thanks. Updating my initial post.
Thanks for reporting the error and tesing. I updated the first post with my howto with this information, too.
And the question of trustedness... :D
Well, on Ubuntu it is quite common to solve problems just like I did: "Add this ppa and install this file and maybe run that script" The problem is, that each user is resposnible for what he is doing. The user should know what software he is going to install.

Fly, thanks for the continued support. This thing is really starting bugging me, but we will get it working.

I tried now the Ubuntu 9.10 version, which is a little better. I installed it according to the official procedure, and it works out of the box (well, almost, because I have no sound and some artifacts with video.) You can find the xorg.conf of the working 9.10 here: http://pastebin.com/vnBa5dE9
About 10.4 I don't have here a nonworking handy, but believe me I put it exactly like jsmaniac suggested in his post on Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:35 am. Of course with my values.

About trying another display. Unfortunately I don't have an easy way to do that, but I guess it is not a display issue, since it works so nice with 9.10.

My short term plans: fall back to 9.04 and try if video is still choppy. If yes, I don't know what to do maybe stay with Windows :(. I will also check the xorg.conf there and then redo all the installation for 10.04 and compare the two working xorg.confs and xorg.0.logs with the one from 10.04. I don't have anything else in mind.

Other question: is there a quick way to make the SPDIF out work under Linux? I have no sound...

You are using IEGD driver, not the PSB driver.

As 9.04 is nearing EndOfLIfe date, I would not recommend this. If 10.04 breaks, I would rather stay with 9.10 -- and try the psb driver there, it is known to work quite well -- till next year in the hope that we have a better support for lucid (and maverick!) by then. I keep my fingers crossed that Yves will have some spare time in the xmas holidays -- or hopefully even earlier -- so he can finish EXA-MIXED conversation. This is the last big NOGO for the psb driver an will likely resolve any remaining issues.
Other question: is there a quick way to make the SPDIF out work under Linux? I have no sound...
Uhm, as I don't have a fitPC2i, but only the first fitPC2, I don't have SPDIF and can't really help. Does alsa see the soundcard? If so, maybe it sees spdif and stereo out as two different soundcards? Just guessing... MAybe I have to get myself a fitPC2i someday... :)

Hello,

I bought my Fit-PC 2i without HDD. Now with a WD Scorpio Blue HDD connected, my installation goes to maximum 50% of the process (in other trials to less than that), then an error keeps occuring, of which I don't know the reason. The installation CD works fine on a laptop PC.
I would appreciate very much some help!

Well, without further information, I am once again just guessing..

You could check /var/log/installer/ for installation log files and maybe there are errors logged which provide more detailed information. I don't know if that is the correct log location, I am just guessing by name :) Maybe ubuntu even opens an emergency shell on one of the virtual terminals (ctrl + alt + function key).

You could try to use the disk in another computer, install ubuntu and then swap it.

You could try to install ubuntu 9.10 to see if it's a lucid issue.

You could try to install from alternate installation cd / text mode.

Is this a revision 1.1?

This is the official desktop installation CD, which I got a few weeks ago from https://shipit.ubuntu.com.

I was referring to the revision of the fitPC2i. First revision had some problems with HDD iirc. There's a thread about this issue including a patched kernel and lucid-server iso. I don't know if that'S really targeting your problem, but you might want to have a look. Again, without detailed information, it's hard to guess what might cause (or solve) the problem.

I just tryed a clean install of 10.04 using the instructionson the fisrt post, I get as far as installing the patched psb drivers and all's I get is a blank screen. I haven't checked to see if the compulab xorg file makes a difference, but when I upgraded (from 9.10), it didn't.
what would happen if i followed the 9.10 instructions using 10.04?

It should make a difference, because without you will most likely not be able to get X up.

You will run into version mismatches. The packages are not built for lucid and are built against other library, kernel and xorg versions. The custom-kernel included in the 9.10 install will most likely not work.

I installed ubuntu 10.04 as in this thread, but after instaling poulsbo drivers, and configure xorg.conf my Philips LCD TV 37PFL7603D_10 reports "This video format is not supported":

I try different modeline settings, and nothing works. If worked with Windows XP and Windows vista in full HD resolution. It works with my Mac Book.

From my MacBook i got EDID (at the end of post). It also propose me some modeline settings, I tryed this, but it does not help. When I do startx I got:
