Post problem with hw accelerated 1920x1080 video decode/playback
Background Info

We purchased a fit-PC2 for playing back H.264 encoded 1920x1080 HD videos streamed over LAN making use of its hardware acceleration via video acceleration API (VA API). The fit-PC2 is connected to a 1920x1080 capable display using HDMI connection.

In order to get the Linux distro officially supported by Compulab I installed the fit-PC2 as specified in Installing Linux Mint 9.

Hardware: fit-PC2 rev. 1.4, Atom CPU Z530 @ 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM
BIOS Date: 05/12/10
Installed OS: Linux Mint 9 Isadora from Gnome CD (32-bit)
Additions: fit-PC2 packages from Compulab's repo (kernel, poulsbo xserver, libva, mplayer-vaapi)
Graphics environment: Poulsbo X Server (emgd driver) from Compulab's repo with simple openbox window manager (no compositing WM to avoid any problems related to it)
Test Video: H.264 1920x1080p@24fps video Big Buck Bunny from the official download page licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license (size: 725,106,140 B, md5sum: c23ab2ff12023c684f46fcc02c57b585, run time: 9 min 56 s, average bit rate 9.7 Mb/s)

Problems

Hardware accelerated video playback using mplayer-vaapi (and own libva based software) does not work for full HD (1920x1080) H.264 encoded videos. This seems to be the case for MPEG-4 encoded videos, too, as reported by alexandre17220 in his post mplayer and hd movie "Bug Buck Bunny" crash. The video frames seem to be decoded only partially, with freezing periods inbetween, finally leading to a crash (see section VARIOUS LOGS below) or sometimes to a complete freezing of the OS requiring a hard switch-off. The faulty decode/playback generates many "vmap allocation for size ... failed", "MMU FAULT Interrupt" and "MSGID_CMD_HW_PANIC" entries in the syslog file (see below).

However, mplayer-vaapi + vaapi libraries (or own libva based software) will play lower resolution and/or lower profile H.264 encoded videos fine (e.g. the H.264 encoded video stream with resolution 1280x720p@30fps from a AXIS P3344 webcam or the H.264 encoded movie trailer The Bourne Ultimatum - 1080p Trailer with resolution 1920x816p@24fps and CE-baseline profile). For the working examples the load of the Atom CPU is as low as 3.5 %.

The suggestion of smattr (installing the standard mplayer) is not a solution to the problem because it is not capable to use hardware acceleration, so playback of the above named "Big Buck Bunny" video with standard mplayer will be slowed down to a few frames per second :-(

Minor quirk: Exiting from X switches back to the tty1 console with an almost always badly corrupted font.

QUESTIONS
  1. Is there any way to get hardware accelerated playback of H.264 encoded 1920x1080 videos working in officially supported Mint 9 release on fit-PC2? Did anyone succeed in doing this?
  2. If (a.) is not possible, what is the best supported Linux distro and release for hardware accelerated playback of full HD H.264 videos on fit-PC2?

Unfortunately, Intel does not provide an officially drivers for GMA500 (aka Poulsbo) graphics used on FitPC2 for the Ubuntu linux family. There is a several custom made drivers as you can see here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo, but they all are not providing a sufficient HW acceleration for a FullHD video format. A latest Windows 7 drivers (emgd 1.10/1.14) provide almost clear HW acceleration for a 1920x1080 video files.

Please contact rma@compulab.co.il to check for refund eligibility.

Please check for a FitPC3 solution, that provides full HW acceleration for a 1920x1080 video to the Linux Mint family.
