Virtualisation on fit-PC3

I have a fit-PC3 running Windows 7. I'm thinking about upgrading to Win8 so I can run Hyper-V but it occurred to me that there might be an alternative.
Does anyone use any other virtualisation on a fit-PC3? I have VMware Player running but it's no good because it doesn't managed the guest when the host is restarted. I need something that works like Hyper-V on a server because I want my guest running all of the time - if the host restarts, the guest must be managed i.e. shutdown/slept/hibernated/saved/? and restarted/woken when the host is back up.
