Set SN in bios

Post by 167600 »

Hi!

I'm having problems figuring out if the serial number is set in the Bios. The company I'm working for uses it or one of the unset identifers in system info (Se below) to identify the computer in the network and when I'm using their network installer for windows 7 all machines are detected as one and I can't change the prefferred computername. I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in order to find out what the OS can and can't read and this is what I found when I ran the command "sudo dmidecode | less"

Manufacturer: Compulab
Product name: fit-PC3
Version: Unknown
Serial number: Unknown
UUID: D381FA2E-014C8B57-860BD28BF331
Wake-up Type: Power Switch
SKU Number: System SKU Number Unknown
Family: Family Number Unknown

There was a lot more info but that was what i figured mattered, labled System information.

If it isn't set: Is there any way to set it? It is printed on the machine but that doesn't help our network :)

The SN is only printed on the Label on the PC and the box it came with.
BIOS does not and will not store such information (as BIOS is common between all the machines).
