Most USB webcam's will work out of the box, due to the linux community supporting them, you will most likely not be able to use all the features of the webcam unless you google the exact model of your webcam to ensure all features are supported.
I would recommend a Logitech, or Microsoft Cam as they have worked for me. As for the Linux software, My preference is Cheese.

The basic install command - Ubuntu - Debian
In console (Terminal):
## Has Deb/Ubuntu update the apt sources
$
## Installs the program cheese
$
(follow on screen messages)
After it exits, it should show up in your Audio/Video folder on the *gnome menu
or you can run the application via console (terminal)
$
