Intense PC Randomly Locks up

Post by MrWendle »

Long time user of Fit-PC2 & Fit-PC3 units. Recently purchased 3 Intense PC units.

All Units with the same base config, PN: C3517V-WB-FM4U.

Two of the units work flawlessly, installs of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008R2 worked first time through and are rock solid.

One unit randomly locks up. Unable to find root cause.

Same RAM in all boxes, all ram passes 24hrs with Memtest_x86+ (in one of the working units). Have tried swapping RAM in/out of all units. Problem follows chassis.

All units have SSDs, Intel 320/Intel 510/Intel 520. Problem follows chassis.

I've tried every BIOS setting, including restoring to defaults.

Is there a beta bios I can try, or should I simply setup an RMA?

There is a known issue with this Intel's SSD storage on an AHCI mode. Please use an IDE mode with those SSDs (you can select it from the BIOS) and reinstall your OS.

Changing to IDE mode did not fix the problem. I don't think this is the AHCI bug.
All three drives work just fine in the other chassis with AHCI enabled.

The system locks up usually 1-2 minutes into the Windows install. Mouse and keyboard stop working and if I leave it long enough, video blanks out.

If there is such possibility, please do the following tests.

1. Run some live OS, like Ubuntu for about a 10~15 minutes. Check if the system locks up
2. Do the same with the just BIOS menu running
3. If the above tests passed, try to use a mechanical HDD for a Windows installation

BIOS Intermittently locks up, unable to consistently reproduce the issue.

Tried the unit with an actual HDs, same problem (WD WD5000BPVT & WD7500BPKT) with Windows install.
Currently downloading an Ubuntu Live CD, I will post the results shortly.

I was able to successfully boot into Ubuntu once. Unit locked up shortly after that.
Second pass, unit locked up before getting all the way booted.
Third pass, unit locked up shortly after getting to the Ubuntu desktop.

The results above are typical, even if I use a DVD-rom (the tests above were performed with a USB stick).

I am sorry for an inconvenience. The unit is probably fault. Please consider to RMA the IntencePC. If you have any trouble please PM me, and I will do my best to assist you.

This *May be* a memory problem. Try replacing the installed memory with some other brand. Apparently IntensePC can be picky on memory module.

I reviewed that thread, and I thought it might be the case, but I'm experiencing the issue on a consistent basis, 1-2 minutes after booting.

I swapped the RAM from one of the other fully functional Intense PC units (I'm working with three identical units, same RAM type/manufacture).
The only thing different item between the units is the model of Intel SSD (320/520/510).
The other two units work perfectly, no matter what combo of RAM/HDD/SSD I put in them. They've been in production for 2 weeks, with no issues as of yet.

The third unit locks up, 1-2 minutes in (Windows/Linux, HDD/SDD/USB), no matter what combo of parts I use. If it was random, I would suspect RAM.
I'm currently have an RMA in process with CompuLab to get the unit replaced.
